Stack sizes and storage
Most items stack to 64. Items like ender pearls, eggs, snowballs and signs stack to 16. Tools, armour, potions and other unstackable items take a whole slot each.
- Shulker boxes and single chests have 27 slots. A double chest has 54.
- Shulker boxes can’t go inside other shulker boxes, so the shulker box figure doesn’t apply if you’re storing shulker boxes themselves.
- Custom sizes are for items whose stack size has been changed by a data pack or command. Since Java Edition 1.20.5 this can be anything from 1 to 99.
- Storage figures count full slots: the leftover items still need one slot of their own.
Common questions
Do all items stack to 64?
No. Most do, but items such as ender pearls, snowballs, eggs, signs and empty buckets stack to 16, and tools, armour, potions and filled buckets don’t stack at all.
How many items fit in a shulker box?
A shulker box has 27 slots, so 1,728 items that stack to 64, 432 that stack to 16, or 27 unstackable items.
Can shulker boxes go inside other shulker boxes?
No. A shulker box can’t be put into another shulker box, so plan storage for shulker boxes themselves separately.
Why is there a custom stack size?
Since Java Edition 1.20.5, data packs and commands can change an item’s maximum stack size to anything from 1 to 99.
