Convert

Press F3 in game (Fn+F3 on some laptops) to see your coordinates. Results update as you type.

Enter coordinates

Type X and Z (Y is optional) to see the matching position in the other dimension.

How the conversion works

One block in the Nether matches eight blocks in the Overworld, horizontally. Divide Overworld X and Z by 8 to get Nether coordinates, and multiply Nether X and Z by 8 to go back. Height (Y) isn’t scaled.

  • Negative coordinates round down, as the game does: Overworld X −1 is in Nether block X −1, not 0.
  • Portals aren’t guaranteed to link exactly here. When you go through a portal, the game looks for an existing portal near the matching position and uses the closest one it finds. If there isn’t one, it builds a new portal nearby, which may not be at these exact coordinates.
  • To link two portals reliably, build the second one at the calculated position and make sure no other portal is closer.
  • The teleport command is for Java Edition and needs cheats or operator permission.

Common questions

Why are Nether coordinates divided by 8?

One block in the Nether matches eight blocks in the Overworld horizontally. That is how the game keeps travel through the Nether faster.

Does the Y coordinate change?

No. Only X and Z are scaled. Height stays the same, although the Nether’s build range is different from the Overworld’s.

Will a portal at these coordinates always link?

Not always. In Java Edition the game uses the closest existing portal within 16 blocks of the target in the Nether, or 128 blocks in the Overworld. Another nearby portal can win. See why portals link to the wrong place.
